Cubs sign Paul Maholm

Free agent pitcher Paul Maholm took to his twitter account this evening and announced that he had signed with the Chicago Cubs. “I hope to get to continue some things when I visit during the year and start some great things as I start my Cubs career,” Maholm said on his twitter account. The deal includes a salary of $4.25mm in ‘12 with a club option for $6.5mm for ‘13 or a $500k buyout.

This past season, Maholm posted an ugly 6-14 record but had a 3.66 era in 162 1/3 innings. In seven seasons, all in Pittsburgh, Maholm accumulated a 4.36 era with a 53-73 record.

Maholm made $5.75mm last season and became a free agent after his $9.75mm team option was declined for ‘12.

Phillies release OF John Bowker

The Philadelphia Phillies have released outfielder John Bowker to allow him to play with a professional team in Japan, the club announced via a press release today.

Bowker played in 31 Major League games in 2011 with the Phillies and the Pittsburgh Pirates and hit .133 with two RBIs.

Mets sign Ronny Cedeno

The New York Mets have signed Ronny Cedeno to a one-year deal worth around $1.1mm plus incentives, Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork reports.

Cedeno made $1.85mm last season with the Pirates while hitting .249 in 454 at-bats.

Cedeno became a free agent when the Pirates declined his option for the upcoming season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded right-handed pitcher Jose Veras to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for third baseman Casey McGehee, according to a team press release by the Brewers.

The Brewers agreed to a three-year deal with Aramis Ramirez earlier today.  That move made McGehee expandable for Milwaukee.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hefner, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.  The 40-man roster is now full with this move.

Hefner, 25, has a record of 46-34 with a 3.84 ERA in 131 appearances (120 starts) over five Minor League seasons

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed veteran left handed pitcher Erik Bedard to a one-year, $4.5 million deal according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. An official announcement is expected later today.

The Pirates have designated catcher Jason Jaramillo for assignment in order to make room for Bedard on the 40-man roster adds Langosch.

Bedard was 5-9 with a 3.62 ERA in 129.1 innings in 24 starts for the Red Sox and Mariners in 2011.

The Pirates have signed Nate McLouth to a one-year deal $1.75mm, Ken Rosethenal of FOXSports reports. The deal is pending a physical.

The Braves turned down McLouth’s $10.65mm option for 2012 thus opening the door for him to return to the team he spent the previous five seasons with.

In 267 at-bats in 2011, McLouth hit .228 with 61 total hits.
