Update – Kansas City Royals like Mets RF Jeff Francoeur
By
7/23 11:01: Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says the Kansas City Royals like Francoeur. Francoeur has a relationship with Royals’ GM Dayton Moore during their time in Atlanta. Rosenthal adds that Francoeur’s $5 million salary will be an obstacle.
7/23 02:33: Adam Rubin of ESPN.com says it is farfetched that Francoeur actually gets moved, especially by July 31. Fancoeur is still owed $2 million of his $5 million contract for the season, and teams are having a hard time adding that type of payroll. Secondly, it would leave the Mets short-handed if Carlos Beltran has a setback or if another injury occurs in the outfield. Fancoeur’s performance at the plate could limit interest.
“You’ve got to ask yourself, ‘If I’m playing once a week, how good am I going to be anyway?’ because I’ve never done that,” Francoeur said. “Some people have done that. I’m just going to show up every day and be ready to play and see what happens.”
Rubin said that Francoeur did not request a trade.
“It’s just the logical step, I would imagine,” he said, adding: “I love it here.”
There’s a possibility that Fancoeur could be moved in August as long as he successfully clears waivers.
7/22 08:55: According to an industry source close to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets are trying to trade right fielder Jeff Francoeur, and the team could have a deal in place by the time the Mets finish their series in Los Angeles this weekend.
Francoeur would welcome a trade, according to a person friendly with the right fielder, if it gave him a chance to play every day. His playing time has been diminished with the return of Carlos Beltran from the disabled list. Angel Pagan has taken over most of the right field duties with Francoeur coming off the bench.
Francoeur, 26, is hitting .243/.295/.378 in 91 games with the Mets this season.
