Update 13:35: Ed Price of MLB Fan House Tweets: Major-league source with knowledge of process on report of #Twins deal with Mauer: “Whatever you heard was not accurate.”

Update 13:31: According to Buster Olney of ESPN: Multiple sources now saying that the report on a preliminary agreement for Mauer is not accurate.

2/1 13:13: According to WCCO-TV Mark Rosen, catcher Joe Mauer has come to a preliminary ten-year agreement with the Minnesota Twins. Mauer would have been a free agent after the 2010 season.

Negotiations between Mauer and the Twins began last week. Manager Ron Gardenhire said last week that he was confident that Mauer would sign a long-term contract before Spring Training.

Mauer, 26, became the first catcher in Major League history to win three batting titles when he hit .365 in 2009. He also led the league in on-base percentage (.444) and slugging percentage (.587) in ‘09, making him the first AL player to accomplish what some have called “the modern Triple Crown” since George Brett in 1980. A two-time Gold Glove winner and a three-time Silver Slugger, Mauer is considered to be one of the game’s best all-around players, and that’s why it’s no surprise his contract status has already drawn national attention a year before he’s set to reach free agency.
