Randy Johnson Rumors: Will the Big Unit play in 2010 or retire?
ByUpdate 16:02: Several sources report that Randy Johnson has announced his retirement. According to his conference call, he “wanted to go out on my own terms”.
There’s been speculation that Randy Johnson may retire from baseball. The five-time Cy Young Award winner has scheduled a conference call for tonight to “discuss his baseball future”. The call was originally schedule for Wednesday, but was changed to avoid conflict with the Hallf of Fame. Johnson currently is an unsigned free agent.
Several rumors floated around this winter in regards to Johnson’s future. Earlier this Winter there were thoughts that Johnson wanted to reunite with Ken Griffey Jr. and the Seattle Mariners for one last season. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN Tweets today: I just talked to a baseball executive who said he would be only “mildly shocked” if Randy Johnson says he’s pitching in Japan next summer.
Johnson was 8-6 in 22 games last season with the San Francisco Giants, with most of those games before the All Star Break. If he decides to play in his 23rd Major League Season, Johnson will be 46-years-old on Opening Day 2010. His contract that he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1999 allows him to have a personal service job with the club as soon as he decides to hang it up.
