Update 09:07am PST: We goofed on the numbers. The Marlins offered a five-year offer worth $13 million total – not annually. Please forgive us. =)
MLB.com reports that Aroldis Chapman, the 6′4″ 21-year-old left hander from Cuba has received an offer from the Florida Marlins:
- The Marlin’s offer is a five-year contract worth $13 million annually ($65 million).
- Chapman worked out for 50 scouts last week in Houston during an open throwing session setup by his agent where he threw 40-50 pitches in sneakers and off of a wooden mound and topped out at 97 mph.
- He has been clocked as high as 102mph at last year’s World Baseball Classic.
- The Marlin’s offer trumps the Red Sox offer of $15.5 million a couple of weeks ago.
- The large Cuban population in South Florida would project to be be a major attraction in the market.
- The lefty is expected to open the season at Double-A regardless of which team he signs with. However, league officials indicate that he’s very close to being big league ready.
